John Edwards

John Edwards, British Consul-General in Shanghai, graduated from the University of Oxford in 1995 and joined the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1996. He studied Chinese at Beijing Normal University in preparation for his first position in Shanghai as Consul Political and Economic in 2000. On his return to London in 2003, he worked in a number of roles including Head of Human Rights Policy and Projects, Head of Consular Policy and as the Foreign Secretary’s Speechwriter. He was Deputy Consul General at the British Consulate General in Jerusalem from 2008 to 2012. For the past three years he was Minister Counsellor at the British Embassy in Beijing where he oversaw UK-China relations on energy, science and innovation, low carbon, health and urbanisation across the five posts in the mainland China network.

Chris Whittle

At the age of 32, his company bought Esquire magazine, where he served as chairman and publisher for many years. He founded Channel One, a national in-school television news program (first anchored by Anderson Cooper), which reached eight million students daily in 12,000 schools. Channel One’s programming has received a host of awards, including the Peabody Award, one of television journalism’s highest accolades. Chris has a B.A. in American studies from the University of Tennessee.

Lee is Deputy Director for Education at Cambridge Assessment International Education, where he has responsibility for teacher and school leader development, as well as school improvement initiatives more broadly. He joined Cambridge from The Aga Khan Academies – an agency within the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) – where he held the position of Director of Academic Planning and led the design, development and eventual opening of the network’s third operating Academy in Maputo, Mozambique. While in East Africa, Lee also established numerous outreach and professional development programmes for local government schools, as part of the Academies’ broader development remit. Before this, Lee was Head of Online Professional Learning at the International Baccalaureate Organisation and has held senior leadership positions in schools in Argentina and Sri Lanka. Dr. Maggie Koong is the Chief Principal of Victoria Educational Organisation (VEO) and the Co-Founder and Deputy Supervisor of Victoria Shanghai Academy. She received her Master of Education from The University of Hong Kong and Doctor of Education from University of Durham. Since her return to Hong Kong in 1985, Dr. Koong has spearheaded progress in education in Hong Kong, China and across the world. She has been directly appointed by the Government of Hong Kong SAR to serve on key government committees since 1993, including the Committee on Free Kindergarten Education, the Equal Opportunities Commission, the Women’s Commission, the Family Council and the Council of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She is also a project advisor for UNESCO and an NGO representative for the United Nations. Her achievements in public and community service have brought her many accolades, including among others a Bronze Bauhinia Star from the HKSAR government in 2013 and Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters awarded by Whittier College, USA in 2014. In the same year, she was elected World President of the World Organization for Early Childhood Education (OMEP), an NGO with almost 70 member countries. In 2015, she was awarded Honorary Fellowship by The Education University of Hong Kong in recognition of her enormous contribution to child development and education.

Jan Dubiel

Jan Dubiel is the International Development Director at Early Excellence and works as part of the team to support Early Years managers, leaders, teachers, practitioners and Settings in all aspects of practice and provision. Having trained as an Early Years specialist, Jan worked as a Nursery, Reception and Year 1 teacher in schools across the country, leading teams as an Early Years co-ordinator. Following roles as an Early Years Consultant and Senior Adviser, he was appointed by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) to lead on the management of the (Early Years) Foundation Stage Profile, and had national responsibility for its implementation and moderation, developing guidance and support materials and working at a strategic level with policy makers. More recently he was responsible for developing a Government funded national Baseline Assessment for YR which was used by 12,000 schools in England. Jan has developed a national and international reputation as a conference speaker, consultant and trainer and he has written widely on different aspects of Early Years pedagogy. In 2016, he founded Opal Education, which specialises in taking British education brands to China. So far, with help from Opal, Lucton School has opened its first overseas kindergarten in downtown Shanghai in December 2017 and its first international senior school will open in Pudong District of Shanghai in 2018. Lucton is now set to open over 30 kindergartens and 5 senior schools in China in the next 3-5 years. Opal has also helped Poppies Day Care to open up to 10 day care centres in Chengdu in the next 3 years.

Jia Liu (Luka)

Luka Liu, an educator with 16-year of professional experience accumulated at secondary and tertiary level, has successfully established the international curriculum centre within a public middle school in China (Shenzhen Foreign Languages School) and undertaken the teaching task for AP and A-level courses. Along with her six-year managerial and academic exposure at the international curriculum centre, a total of about 500 Chinese graduates have advanced their studies at renowned universities worldwide, which is indispensable with Luka’s efforts in building up various channels for young elites from China to pursue their dream overseas. At the invitation of Shenzhen Municipal Government in 2016, Luka has steered the wheel as the Head of an international school for IB curriculum, providing primary and secondary education, with a target enrolment of 1200 students. In comparison with pedagogical and administrative approaches in China and western countries, Luka has formulated her own thoughts on issues such as curriculum, pedagogy, and moral education. Luka will combine the strengths of running schools in different countries. Luka also endeavours to inherit and integrate the essence of Chinese and western culture.
